Buffet Before |
Buffet After |
Each restoration project has similarities but differences too. This one needed to be taken apart first; remove the cabinet doors, take off the hinges, remove the handles and sand all the pieces individually then tackle the body. The top back piece was not in place and had to be reconnected to the buffet. The sides were the only part of this piece that had veneer, which had split on the bottom. Once everything had been stripped and sanded, each piece got stained.
The sides received a decorative piece of wood that mimicked the front and looked as if they had been there all along. This covered the split veneer quite well and will last for the life of this old beauty. I had some fun with the photo and spliced it together to show the "before" and "after" in one combined photo. You can really appreciate the transformation when you compare the left side to the right side!

The stain chosen was Minwax golden pecan, which brought out all the natural tones of the wood, a combination of walnut, birch and cherry. The top was solid wood (not veneer), so it sanded beautifully and took the stain extremely well. The water stains that had marred the top surface and cabinet doors magically disappeared, replaced by a freshly glowing, shiny new surface.
Each handle had its own personality and color, each blending perfectly once reinstalled in their places. The curvy decorative top in the back had been securely attached, finishing off this once worn buffet. The transformation of this lovely part of a family's history was incredible and we were so happy to be a part of it.
