1970's Cabinet Before |

Cabinet After Renovation |
It's amazing how a bit of creative vision can transpire an ugly, outdated piece of furniture such as this 1970's era atrocity. This may have been popular back in 1972, but by today's standards, it was painfully outdated. Still, it had potential and would prove to be useful once again after a bit of renovation a lot of creativity, or perhaps equal parts of both. It had a black top, that looked suspiciously like a piece of laminate, which made the piece quite durable. However, the cabinet doors simply
had to go.

The bottom had a very large molding, resembling an overlarge crown molding seen in homes. It dated the piece, so it was removed and replaced with a flat board, leaving a clean, straight line and taking up less floor space. In lieu of the doors, we elected leaving the cabinet front open, adding another board to increase the first shelf's depth, so that baskets can be used in the event it will be used in a child's room, but can also function as a craft room cabinet, bathroom storage, or laundry room folding table. It's uses are indeed endless after the transformation.

We generally prefer staining furniture instead of painting it, but at times, paint is the better choice if a piece has a lot of repair or structural damage. In this case, the structure was intact, but the modifications didn't allow for staining. I also chose to keep the same handles, which worked, but the outdated brass was updated with a spray coat of gray paint, keeping the overall appearance neutral and 21st Century efficient.
Of all the pieces we've done (and that's a lot!) this one had taken on the biggest overall transformation with the most uses of any other furniture item we've done. It needs to find a home, so if you're interested in this piece, please give us a call!
